“e-Commerce of Food” -  International Conference on Trends and Official Control

The European Commission and the  German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) have kindly invited GFSI to speak at their upcoming event titled “e-Commerce of Food”. Anne Gerardi, GFSI Senior Manager, will present the work done over the past two years by dedicated working groups in GFSI's China and US-Canada Local Groups. The continuous rapid growth of e-commerce and on-demand food delivery has highlighted a clear need to evaluate and assess food safety risks, regulatory and audit gaps, as well as opportunities for alignment. These groups have convened both industry experts and regulators on the topic of e-commerce and its impact on food safety. Anne will explain how GFSI intends to continue the work on this key topic at a global level in the near future.




GFSI at IFC Conference in West Africa

GFSI will be represented in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire next week at the IFC conference: Food Safety: Creating Opportunities in West Africa. GFSI Senior Manager Anne Gerardi will speak about the Global Food Safety Initiative with a special focus on food safety capability building via GFSI's Global Markets Programme, which offers a step-by-step approach to improving food safety already used by hundreds of SMEs all over the world. She will extend an invitation for regional operations to apply for the 2020 GFSI Global Markets Awards. More broadly, she will explain how African companies can leverage GFSI tools to meet certification requirements and increase market acess. 




GFSI at the Food Safety Consortium

The food safety community is an interconnected one and GFSI will be referenced and represented in more ways than one this week at the Food Safety Consortium. Of special note, GFSI Board member Cindy Jiang will be participating in a plenary panel discussion that will look at "Building Smarter, Safer, and more Sustainable Food Supply Chains."  Cindy will be speaking on behalf of GFSI as well as McDonalds, within her capacity as the Senior Director of Global Food and Packaging Safety. The diverse panel will include representives from Agriculture, Manufacturing, Retail and Food Service.

SIAL is the world's largest food innovation exhibition and for the third consecutive event, GFSI was present, shooting a segment on SIAL TV. GFSI's Director Véronique Discours-Buhot was joined on a diverse panel by the food safety leads for French agribusiness giants Danone and Auchan, Board members Frédéric René and Pierre De Ginestel, as well as Bruno Sechet, Technical Director of IFS, one of the GFSI-recognised certification programmes. The theme? When collaboration is crucial! How can the industry work together with all food safety stakeholders to secure safe food for consumers everywhere? Guided by SIAL's journalist, they explained to viewers how food businesses can benefit from the work of the Global Food Safety Initiative. They also shared some exciting advancements that GFSI is leading on harmonisation, knowledge-sharing and partnerships on a global multi-stakeholder scale. Watch it here.




GFSI Chile Team at the 2nd Food Safety Culture Workshop in the Maule Region

Thanks to the support of the member companies on our GFSI Chile team, GFSI is pleased to participate in the Food Safety Culture Workshop in the Maule Region in Chile this November. This work fits within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) GFSI recently formed with Achipia (Chilean Agency for Quality and Food Safety). The event includes a Seminar on Food Safety Culture where around 150 people from the food industry, the academic sector and the public sector are attending. Additionally, a series of artistic activities and experiences related to food safety at schools is taking place, with the participation of more than 2000 children. The event will be held on 8th of November on the Campus of the University of Talca.




GFSI in Singapore at IAF-ILAC Joint Annual Meeting

This year's event marks the 25th anniversary of IAF, the International Accreditation Forum. GFSI Board and Technical Working Groups Convene in Greensboro

Food safety experts from major retail, manufacturing and food service operations who make up the GFSI Board of Directors are gathered in Greensboro for two full days of Board meetings this week. The rest of the week will be dedicated to more meetings, those of GFSI's Technical Working Groups, all kindly hosted by Ecolab. This is the final of three such committments in 2018, and it's worth keeping in mind that these individuals and the companies they represent dedicate time and resources on a voluntary basis to drive food safety advances for the benefit of the consumer.




GFSI Participating in ISO Technical Committee Meetings

Thanks to Aldin Hilbrands who is participating in the ISO TC34/SC17 technical meetings in Bordeaux, France this month! Aldin is Technical Director of GFSI-recognised CPO (certification programme owner) FSSC 22000. The ISO Working Group is revising ISO/TS 22003 as a support standard for the certification of food safety system standards. It’s fantastic to have GFSI represented in these discussions focused on combining efforts to further harmonise food safety approaches.

In addition to answering questions at the GFSI booth for the duration of the event, they also took to the stage. Natalie Dyenson, GFSI Board member, spoke on behalf of GFSI during the plenary "Auditing Against Different Regulatory Requirements." Thank to IAFP and its affiliate, the Argentine Food Safety Commission, for hosting this event!

GFSI at 9th SGS Food Forum in Moscow - "Time to Act"

GFSI Board Member Pierre De Ginestel will deliver a presentation on behalf of GFSI, followed by an open Q&A, at the 2017 SGS Food Forum taking place in Moscow in July. The talk is set within the framework of a session on Global Food Safety Standards and will look at the how the industry, through GFSI, is advancing harmonisation and trust in food safety around the world. De Ginestel is Corporate Quality Director at French retail giant Auchan and is an active contributor to the Global Food Safety Initiative. Throughout the years, GFSI has often played a part in Forums such as this one, which focuses on quality and sustainability in the food industry.

According to the organisers, delegates' feedback from previous events has shown that GFSI is an  important topic to the programme and highlighted the wish to see it on this year's agenda as well. GFSI-recognised certification programmes are in high demand among Russian food producers, they explain, and this year it seems particularly important to discuss the 7th version of the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements.

The 9th edition is set to gather about 200 food professionals, including businesses and governmental authorities, from Russia and other CIS countries, which often include Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Latvia and Turkmenistan.

Danny Wegman on the Upswing of GFSI, Benefits for Large and Small Companies, and Even Governments

The CEO of US retail giant Wegmans Food Markets, spoke today at the CGF Global Summit on how GFSI is providing local solutions for a global food supply. He praised the work of the industry-led Global Food Safety Initiative, pointing to the benefits for large and small companies, and ultimately, consumers. Even governments, he explained, are collaborating more and more with GFSI to adopt and leverage industry best practice.
