8 October, 2015 – Paris, France The GFSI Board of Directors is pleased to announce a new scope extension. The GLOBALG.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance scheme, Aquaculture has been successfully benchmarked by GFSI and has achieved recognition against the GFSI Guidance Document Sixth Edition.

The document has been recognised against:

Scope A II – Farming of Fish

The final benchmark review was carried out by benchmark committee leader, Steve Homer, Managing Director, SMH Projects.

This brings the total number of recognised scopes to three (Integrated Farm Assurance – Fruit and Vegetables, Integrated Farm Assurance – Aquaculture and GLOBALG.A.P. Produce Safety Standard). The GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture standard has been the only aquaculture standard to go through the GFSI benchmarking process against scope A II (v5 and v6 GFSI Guidance documents). Other aquaculture schemes were benchmarked under scope E I (Processing of Animal Perishable Products).

Dr. Kristian Moeller, CEO of GLOBALG.A.P. commented that “The GFSI recognition of the Aquaculture scope of the GLOBALG.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance standard proves GLOBALG.A.P.’s commitment to food safety in a sector that is dominated by requirements for sustainability. As the only aquaculture standard for farming with GFSI recognition we are pleased to offer our collaboration to all serious sustainability labels for farmed seafood and mitigate their food safety risk.

ABOUT GLOBALG.A.P.

G.A.P. stands for Good Agricultural Practice – and GLOBALG.A.P. is the worldwide standard that assures it. GLOBALG.A.P. is an affiliate organisation of a not-for-profit trade association with a crucial objective: safe, sustainable agricultural production worldwide. It sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the globe - and more and more producers, suppliers and buyers are harmonizing their certification standards to match.

The GLOBALG.A.P. flagship standard is the Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard which covers crops, livestock and aquaculture and emphasizes a progressive, holistic approach to farm certification. The certification criteria of the Fruit and Vegetables scope of the IFA standard focus on:

  • Food Safety and Traceability
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Worker Operational Health and Safety
  • Integrated Pest Management, Quality Management System and basic Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)

The GFSI application was only for the Food Safety and Traceability elements.
