I was pleased to represent GFSI at the recent VI Latin American Symposium on Food Safety that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina recently. It was an exciting week where leading experts within the food industry from Latin America and North America met together to exchange knowledge and best practice in food safety.
Huge thanks to the Argentina team of the GFSI South LatAm Local Group, who did a fantastic job at the GFSI Booth, helping delegates better understand the work of the Global Food Safety Initiative and how they can get involved. The team of volunteers included Local Group members from companies such as La Anonima, Arcos Dorados, BRF, Arcor, Nestlé, AxionLog, Cargill and Molinos del Rio.
Over the three-day event, discussions at the booth ranged from global GFSI strategy to recent achievements of the Local Group in South LatAm. Delegates were most interested in GFSI’s capability building programme, the Global Markets Progamme, as well as our benchmarking work and how operations can achieve certification to a GFSI-recognised certification programme. Around the world, this has become a “food safety passport” of sorts and is highly sought after as a mark of food integrity and safety.
GFSI’s participation in the Symposium also extended to the plenary sessions, where our GFSI Board Liaison for Latin America, Natalie Dyenson, VP Food Safety and Quality at Dole Foods, participated in a round table titled "Auditing Against Different Regulatory Requirements". She provided context on GFSI’s strategy globally as well as in Latin America for the audience, before zooming in on GFSI’s approach to the US FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
Since joining the LatAm branch of The Consumer Goods Forum less than a year ago, I have been blown away by the enthusiasm I’ve witnessed around GFSI’s work from an ever-increasing number of stakeholders. From my vantage point here in the midst of so many partnerships spearheaded by GFSI in the region, I see potential for even more actors to join this vast global discussion. It seems that every day, new stakeholders – from industry, academia, IGOs or even national government agencies -are getting on board with GFSI’s approach to food safety collaboration for the benefit of consumers everywhere.
