The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced, on 12 September, 2017, an extension to the Agricultural Microbiological Water Quality Profile (MWQP) clauses in the Produce Safety Rule.

GFSI-recognised Certification Programmes have modified their audit requirements and/or created FSMA-specific addendums to meet the requirements of the MWQP clauses. Certification Program Owners (CPOs) have been requested to align their conformance timelines with US FDA regulation timelines. This does not affect existing CPO requirements and/or criteria targeted to meet requirements in other countries' legislation.

GFSI requires that the water for primary production irrigation and harvesting fertilisers, pest control and other agricultural chemicals, where warranted by risk assessment, shall be tested for microbial and chemical contaminants.

GFSI is committed to working with the FDA as the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) regulations are being applied for US-based food producers and global food exporters to the US market. We are committed to providing safe food for consumers everywhere.
