     Amidst ASEAN and APEC meetings, November also saw industry and government leaders from China and abroad descend on Shanghai, seeking to harness the benefits of the “GFSI approach”. The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) hosted its 7th China Focus Day on 6 November, drawing 360 food industry stakeholders to explore how implementing GFSI tools and principles can pave the way toward safer food and better business.

    In November of 1919, Mr. Toichiro Nakashima founded Kewpie Corporation after discovering marmalade and mayonnaise during his stay as a trainee in the UK and USA. This led to the start of mayonnaise production in 1925. The business has since then grown and spread accross various categories. In this article, this major food manufacturer with a long history reveals the journey of how GFSI-recognised certification has spread among many factories including hardships leading up to this achievement.

    After he spoke in the opening plenary at the GFSI Conference 2019, we interviewed Mr. Ikko Watanabe of Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to gain further insights on “Open Lab”, which he presented as a public-private partnership framework that challenges the weaknesses of the conservative government agency.

    1919年11月創立のキユーピー株式会社は、創始者の中島董一郎氏がイギリス、アメリカに実習生として滞在中ママレードやマヨネーズに出会い、1925年にマヨネーズを製造開始されました。現在は調味料、タマゴ、サラダ・惣菜、加工食品、ファインケミカル、物流システムの6事業を展開し、マヨネーズ、ドレッシングやパスタソースといったなじみのある商品以外にも、ベビーフードや流動食、介護食等、人のライフステージに沿った商品も提供。グループ会社にはママレードで有名なアヲハタ、物流のキユーソー流通システムをはじめ、デリア食品、ケイパック、ディスペンパックジャパン等幅広く展開されています。今回、歴史ある大手食品メーカーが、GFSI承認規格取得に至った経緯と、複数工場で取得を実現した経緯を伺いました。
