25 August, 2016 – Paris, France The GFSI Board of Directors is pleased to announce a new scope extension. The GLOBALG.A.P. Harmonized Produce Safety Standard V1.0 has been successfully benchmarked by GFSI and has achieved recognition against the GFSI Guidance Document Sixth Edition, Scope BI - Farming of Plants and D1- Pre Processing Handling of Plant Products.
After a successful benchmarking process with an independent multi-stakeholder benchmarking committee and a four-week public consultation, the final benchmark review was carried out by benchmark committee leader, Vince Craig, Managing Director, Meadowbrae Technical Services.
This brings the total number of recognised scopes to four, with:
The HPSS is the combination of the Field Operations and Harvesting and the Post-harvest Operations Harmonized Food Safety Standards developed by United Fresh and operationalized and managed by GLOBALG.A.P.
"We applaud GLOBALG.A.P. on the completion of this new benchmarking process and the food safety leadership that it demonstrates by driving continuous improvement for food safety management solutions across the supply chain," commented Véronique Discours-Buhot, GFSI Director at The Consumer Goods Forum. "By undertaking GFSI benchmarking, scheme owners such as GLOBALG.A.P. illustrate their dedication to furthering harmonisation and continually raising the bar in food safety systems around the world. This is how progress happens."
Dr. Kristian Moeller, CEO of GLOBALG.A.P. commented that “GLOBALG.A.P. was founded 20 years ago on the principles of transparency, credibility and harmonization, and we take pride in the benchmarking and other relationships we have developed with G.A.P. schemes worldwide over the years. We actively seek GFSI recognition because significant markets value this benchmarking as a tool that supports those founding principles."
G.A.P. stands for Good Agricultural Practice – and GLOBALG.A.P. is the worldwide standard that assures it. GLOBALG.A.P. is an affiliate organization of a not-for-profit trade association with a crucial objective: safe, sustainable agricultural production worldwide. It sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the globe - and more and more producers, suppliers and buyers are harmonizing their certification standards to match.
The Harmonized Produce Safety Standard (HPSS) is a new food safety standard managed and operated by GLOBALG.A.P. As opposed to GLOBALG.A.P.'s Integrated Farm Assurance Standard (IFA), the HPSS - like the current Produce Safety Standard (PSS) - covers only food safety and traceability. The core of the standard is the combination of the United Fresh Produce GAPs Harmonization Initiative’s “Field Operations and Harvesting” and “Post-Harvest Operations” standards. These standards were, approved in 2013 as the Integrated Farm Assurance and PSS standards' Interpretation Guideline for the USA. The PSS has GFSI benchmarking. The HPSS is to be audited according to the GLOBALG.A.P. General Regulations and the HPSS addendum. The HPSS may be used by producers around the world especially in North, Central and South America, selling to those buyers requesting this certification, especially in North America.
ABOUT THE GLOBAL FOOD SAFETY INITIATIVE
The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) brings together key actors of the food industry to collaboratively drive continuous improvement in food safety management systems around the world. With a vision of Safe food for consumers everywhere, food industry leaders created GFSI in 2000 to find collaborative solutions to collective concerns, notably to reduce food safety risks, audit duplication and costs while building trust throughout the supply chain. The GFSI community works on a volunteer basis and is composed of the world's leading food safety experts from retail, manufacturing and food service companies, as well as international organisations, governments, academia and service providers to the global food industry. GFSI is powered by The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), a global industry network working to support Better Lives Through Better Business.
