There is one thing that GFSI’s Local Group in China has done continually since it was founded in 2013 – and that’s growing. More than 40 companies have joined the China Food Safety Initiative (CFSI) to advance food safety in China and implement global food safety strategy and a local level.

Today, over 160 industry experts actively participate in CFSI across its six different work streams and the group has more exciting developments than ever.

Setting up a First-in-kind Discovery Tour

With several public-private partnerships under their belt, the Local Group continued their strides towards improved collaboration between industry and government with a first-of-its-kind discovery tour. Developing and Translating Materials

Tirelessly developing and translating materials for Chinese operators is another thing the Local Group does. Supporting food operations in developing markets with a step-by-step capability building programme in their language. This was also a key tool for the pilot training in April. Read more.

Test Driving a Pilot Food Safety Training

GFSI China Training 7This two-day training aimed to equip attendees from local manufacturing operations with the knowledge to raise food safety capacity in their operations thanks to GFSI’s capability building programme.

In collaboration with the local government, the GFSI Local Group in China set up this pilot training in April for over 150 people. The Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (Shanghai CIQ) kindly hosted the training and provided lunch for the trainees and GFSI experts.

More than 92.4% of trainees expressed their satisfaction with this training, of which 73.1% said they were very satisfied and will be able to implement their learnings in their companies for the benefit of consumers.

This is an excellent example of the implementation support The Consumer Goods Forum and its Global Food safety Initiative continually strive to provide members. Food operations of all sizes across the supply chain can benefit from the tools and guidance crafted by GFSI’s work streams, no matter where in the world they operate.

Setting up a First-in-kind Discovery Tour

In order to help retail and catering members gain a better understanding of how their products are being checked and tested when they import, the GFSI China Local Group arranged a discovery tour with the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone and Shanghai CIQ - the Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.

Delegates from nineteen companies benefited from the tour, including Wal-Mart, Metro, Carrefour, Auchan, AEON, Vanguard, Tesco, Danone, Starbucks, Yum, Shanghai Disneyland and Shanghai Jiaotong University.

In a satisfaction survey, participants rated the event 4.75 out of 5 and expressed an interest for GFSI China to organize more such activities, including visits and awareness building on customs.

GFSI China Toolkit 3The China Local Group is proud to have finished its translation work on GFSI's Global Markets Programme for Manufacting operations. This work was done and reviewed directly by the groups Capability Building taskforce members, who dedicated time over four months on a volunteer basis.

Many thanks to all who have contributed towards this effort, which will further the implementation of the Global Markets Programme in China.

Making this toolkit available in Chinese is key to moving forward on the strategic partnership for food safety capability building formed by GFSI and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) last year.

Other training materials are also being crafted by the China Local Group this year and more updates will be made at the upcoming China Focus Day.
