Failures within complex supply chains are a huge risk to food safety – could new technology be the answer?

Historically, food safety agendas mainly focused upon assessing and managing risk within the primary processing and manufacturing unit. We now realise that supply chains are, in reality, an aggregation of multiple chains derived from the numerous components which make up the products. Any failure anywhere within these chains can result in major incidents. Is this where new and emerging connected technologies can really start to help?

Technologies to Advance Food Safety to the 21st Century

Quality assurance managers everywhere will agree that there is just simply too much paper to manage in the food processing and preparation operations making operations inefficient and resulting in costly mistakes. How can this situation be improved?

Quality assurance managers everywhere will agree that there is just simply too much paper to manage in the food processing and preparation operations making operations inefficient and resulting in costly mistakes. Temperature logs, traceability information, daily checklists, cleaning schedules, training- all still mostly recorded with pencil and the clipboard. Even when modern technology advances have revolutionized almost every aspect of our lives, one of the most important and vital aspects, monitoring and ensuring the safety of food we consume has not advanced beyond paper and pencil, thus making it error prone and inefficient.

  • Brand Owners Require a Single, Industry-Wide View of Supply-Chain Data - 2017/05/23

As consumers select fresh, prepared, and packaged groceries, some of the world’s most familiar brands are giving way to a growing preference for items that shoppers know to be from trusted sources, regardless of brand equity. Customers expect brand owners to not only know what is in each item; they expect the brand owner to know exactly when and where food ingredients originated.

As such, a major question has been: “If I am certified to a GFSI scheme, does that mean I will also be compliant with the rules of FSMA?”

Ever since the rules of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) began being published, the industry has questioned its linkage with the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) certification. As such, a major question has been: “If I am certified to a GFSI scheme, does that mean I will also be compliant with the rules of FSMA?” The short answer has long been: “You are likely close, but not necessarily completely compliant.” But now, certification to the newly released GFSI Benchmarking Requirements V7 should move food facilities even closer.
