To implement its global strategy at a local level, the GFSI Board decided to create regional networks - GFSI Local Groups. To support the efforts led by GFSI in different parts of the world, the Local Groups support GFSI’s objective to share knowledge and promote a harmonized approach to managing and improving food safety across geographies.

For more detailed information on the GFSI governance model, please refer to the GFSI Governance Model and Rules of Procedure available for download.

To date GFSI has launched six Local Groups:

GFSI Local Group Mandate

The Local Groups have been set up to help deliver to particular GFSI objectives: to develop competencies and capacity and to provide an international stakeholder platform for collaboration. They are industry driven with the active participation of company experts. There are two themes in their mandate from the GFSI Board.

1. Local engagement and awareness building

  • To communicate the GFSI vision, objectives and approach to foster a greater understanding and uptake of GFSI approach with relevant audiences
  • To be ambassadors and represent GFSI at meetings, conferences and seminars
  • To build a network with public institutions, academia and other trade associations to share the GFSI approach
  • To identify opportunities and challenges for GFSI, considering changes in technology and legislation
  • To gather and share feedback on the uptake and impact of the GFSI approach

2. Local implementation platforms

  • To support GFSI on key strategic issues and technical projects, helping to localise the global work
  • To create linkages with public policy makers at national, state and local level so that their regulatory risk management understands the opportunity of manufacturers working with GFSI recognised schemes
  • To support the work on capacity building by helping to implement pilots for the GFSI Global Markets Programme
  • To support the dissemination of information for the GFSI Global Markets Programme, acting as a regional and local relay for communication.
  • To support the work of all the GFSI Technical Working Groups through communication and implementation

What are they doing?

The Groups have undertaken the following activities:

  • Make recommendations to the GFSI Board on how to deliver on food safety locally
  • The development of outreach into companies, governments and relevant organisations
  • The development of locally relevant plans for stakeholder engagement and communication

Facilitation & Meetings

  • There are one or two GFSI Board sponsors on each Local Group
  • Facilitation is either by a member of the group on a rolling basis or by a moderator
  • Quarterly meetings are hosted by a member company on a rolling basis
  • Regular webinars and a centralised workspace provided by GFSI
  • Support from the GFSI Team to provide relevant documents and materials

Reporting & Communication Process

  • Each group establishes its working plan, objectives and expected outputs.
  • The workplan is presented to the GFSI Board by the Board sponsor(s)
  • Board sponsor(s) reports regularly to the whole Board on Local Group progress
  • The GFSI Team ensures the link between the Local Groups and the GFSI TWGs

Who is involved?

  • Local experts from retailers, manufacturers and food service companies drawn from GFSI Board Member companies
  • Representatives from other key companies that are supportive of GFSI & active on GFSI Technical Working Groups
  • Other relevant stakeholders are invited on an ad-hoc basis
